This is one of the greatest films ever made. The direction by Kubrick is absolutely flawless. The camera work in here is brilliant and the use of models is unbelievably realistic. It deserved the Oscar for Best special visual effects. Although made in 1968, the sets used still looks very modern and do not look cheesy at all. At times, the cinematography is breathtaking(such as the scene where the sun is directly on top of the monolith). This film is able to transport you to many different places and has many themes such as man vs machine, the vastness of space and rebirth.
The acting and character development is not that good but it is not the main focus in this film. It does not affect the film one bit. Those who have short attention span should avoid this film at all cost. Many had complained that it is slow moving and extremely boring. To enjoy this film, you have to let it seep into your consciousness. It is only when you are inside it that you can fully understand its power. Those who is left puzzled by the sheer "nonsense" of this film is recommended to at least watch it another time. Do not treat this like a movie. Treat it like a long journey into the unknown.
